Out of concern for the health and well-being of TLC staff and learners during the COVID-19 pandemic, all fall term world language group classes (starting week of September 21), will be transitioned to a NEW online learning platform. Learners will enroll in an accessible, easy-to-use online course that provides both a virtual learning environment (course content, links to additional learning tools/resources, direct communication with instructors) and real-time, instructor-led classes via Zoom.

TLC offers group classes for adults (and adolescents 15+) in some of the most popular world languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Our classes typically meet once weekly for two hours per class over nine weeks. We offer classes for beginning through advanced learners. Visit our class registration site for updates.

If you have some experience with the language you’re interested in and are not a “true beginner,” we suggest you take a look at the class descriptions in our online catalog and see if that helps you decide what level of class is the best fit for you. PLEASE NOTE: All group world language class students with classes at the TN Language Center headquarters building (220 French Landing Drive) and who are NOT state employees must get a Student ID following instructions below, in the section labeled Student ID. If you are returning and you already have a TLC student ID, please bring it with you each time you attend class.

Cost and Registration

The cost of our classes is as follows:

$325  Regular tuition for 9-week classes
(NOTE: for Summer 2020 classes due to COVID-19, the tuition is reduced to $300).

15% off  Tuition for employees of governments other than the State of Tennessee (see below), for employees of nonprofits, for school teachers, high school and college students, active military, and for seniors 60 years and over (coupon code is required; if you’re in one of those categories and need a coupon code, Click here to apply! )

Returning students who took a previous class with us during the immediate previous term and/or filled out an online evaluation will receive special discounts off of the regular tuition.

Free  Full-time state employees with an approved fee waiver (one course per session only)

$30-$70 Average price of course materials, but specific information is available for each class on the registration site. Generally books are used for more than one semester. If books are purchased through TLC’s registration site, they will be held for you on the night of your first class unless you make other arrangements. Please wait for confirmation of your preferred class before picking up materials. Materials may only be returned if unopened and unused.

Class Meeting Hours (General & Summer Intensive)

Typically, regular group world language classes will meet for two hours once a week for 9 weeks, totaling 18 hours of class time.
Classes are typically held from 6pm to 8pm.

Scholarship Program

Scholarship Program

The Rasmussen Scholarship Award Program assists students who require financial assistance to participate in the Institute’s language courses. Founded by Wallace N. Rasmussen, a businessman and philanthropist who made a lifetime commitment to helping others achieve the education he never had. The Rasmussen Scholarship is available only for students applying for TN Language Center’s 150-hour TESL Certificate course, foreign language classes, and English as a second language classes. It is a partial scholarship that covers up to 50% of the total tuition.

The Scholarship Application includes information on how to submit the application and the supporting materials required. Scholarship applications must be received at least 2 weeks before the begin of the course.


We sell textbooks as a service to our students. Textbooks are not a money-making venture for us, and students are welcome to purchase textbooks from other sources.  All textbook sales are final, and we cannot issue any refunds.  Please inspect books carefully before making a purchase, and be sure you intend to continue with the class. If a student transfers to a different class, we will exchange the book if it is in brand new condition. The student will be required to pay any price difference in the new book. TN Language Center will be issuing student IDs for ALL STUDENTS.
You must present this ID when entering the building for class.

State employees should use State IDs!

In order to process your ID, we will need a “passport type” photo.

You may pick up your ID from a designated TN Language Center staff member on the first day of classes.

State Employee Fee Waiver

Full time employees of the State of Tennessee and those whose paychecks are issued by the Tennessee Board of Regents and the University of Tennessee qualify to use a fee waiver at Tennessee’s public institutions of higher education for one class per semester or term. TN Language Center is among the schools that accept fee waivers.

To enroll in a world language group class using a state fee waiver, do the following:

1) Download and print out a State Employee Fee Waiver Form. Fill out the questionnaire and upload the completed form (signed by you and your supervisor) by clicking the button below:

We will contact you to confirm that we’ve received your valid form and issue you a coupon code.

2) Go to our secure registration site and browse the online catalog by choosing the correct “Program” and then searching by language or day for the class you wish to take. Click Register to begin the registration process.

3) Create an account for yourself using your correct email address so you will receive any subsequent correspondence regarding your class. YOU MUST choose “I have a coupon code” AND apply the code once you enter it.

Keep in mind that classes must have at least five students paying tuition before a fee waiver may join. Classes without adequate enrollment are subject to closure or cancellation. If a class reaches capacity and is closed to further enrollment or is canceled due to insufficient enrollment, we will notify you with alternative class options. Please make sure to write legibly.

Refund Policy

TN Language Center reserves the right to cancel a class if fewer than four (4) students paying full tuition are enrolled. If  TLC cancels the class and cannot accommodate you with another class option, your payment will be fully refunded.  Credit card transactions will be credited to the original card used. Refund checks will be mailed for cash or check transactions. This process takes 3 to 4 weeks.

Student-requested withdrawals must be made at least seven (7) days before the start date of a class in order to:

  • receive a refund less a $25 dollar administrative fee, or
  • receive a credit toward a custom class (minimum of 10 hours), or
  • use the balance to purchase class materials, or
  • transfer the balance to another student or a gift certificate, or
  • make a tax-deductible donation to our scholarship fund. 

No refunds or TLC credits will be issued for student withdrawals once classes have begun or for missed classes. For questions about this policy, contact the World Language Department at
