Proficiency Targets

TLC offers beginner, intermediate, and advanced group world language classes.

  • Beginner consists of two levels (Survivor and Explorer). Each level has six sub-levels.
  • Intermediate consists of three levels (Independent-Low, Independent-Mid, and Independent-High). Each level has 4 sub-levels.
  • Advanced consists of three levels (Proficient-Low, Proficient-Mid, and Proficient-High). Each level has 4 sub-levels.

Our group classes are aligned to levels of communicative proficiency based on the guidelines recommended by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). For languages such as French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, which are closely related to English, and German, which is similar to English, the recommended target proficiency goals are as follows:

Proficiency targets will vary slightly for languages that differ to a larger extent from English such as Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Japanese, and Russian.
