Welcome TESL students!
The teaching of English is not a static field. With new theories, practices, and resources being developed worldwide on a regular basis, the field of teaching English is a very dynamic one. An effective teacher is aware of what is available (both tried and true and current developments) and chooses what is appropriate for his/her teaching situation and students. Our goal in this program is to provide you with effective language teaching tools and options — ultimately, a ‘toolkit’ of possibilities, to use the appropriate Scrivener’s label (p. iv).
This training course is designed as an introduction to teaching English for those who are considering teaching English in either their own country or overseas. The course will provide you with a foundation to plan and prepare solid and effective language lessons. Along with the insightful information from the core text, we also will draw from various supplementary textbooks, language journals, and helpful Web sites in order to provide you with current teaching methodologies, recent developments in teaching techniques, and up-to-date materials and activities that reflect current ESL issues. There will be an emphasis on skills development and practical activities, ideas and techniques rather than on theory or academics. Essentially you will be ‘doing’ and ‘teaching’ rather than simply ‘listening to a lecture’ on how to teach. This is not a theoretical body of work, but rather a compilation of practical ideas. It is a collection of example lesson plans, helpful hints and teaching tips, practical ideas and techniques, and lists of helpful resources (texts and Web sites) based on the experience and expertise of language teachers. You will find a wide range of ideas and resources — options from which you can choose to make your own teaching effective and enjoyable!
There are 5 distinct components to our course: • Orientation • Observations • Pre-Training Readings and Tasks • In-Class Training • Teaching Practicum with ESL students
Each individual component plays an important role in your success in this course. You will find that each component draws and builds on the previous one. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you spend your time wisely and allot sufficient time for each segment. The end result will be a solid foundation of knowledge, and practical application in the area of language teaching.

GRADING SCHEME
"A" The student has successfully achieved the established requisites. The student has demonstrated a solid understanding of the fundamental principles of teaching ESL and has been successful in consistently incorporating them into his/her teaching. The student has shown advanced ability in lesson planning and classroom teaching skills.
"B" The student has achieved the established requisites. The student has demonstrated the understanding of the fundamental principles of teaching ESL and has incorporated them into his/her teaching. The student has shown above-average ability in lesson planning and classroom teaching skills. Students with a B grade may be required to redo or retake certain components of the course.
“C” The student has achieved the established requisites. The student has demonstrated an understanding of the fundamental principles of teaching ESL and has incorporated some of them into his/her teaching. The student would profit from further supervision and practice in an ESL classroom to help develop the student’s teaching skills. Students with a C grade may be required to redo or retake certain components of the course.
Retake/Suspended* The student has not achieved the established requisites. The student has not sufficiently demonstrated an understanding of the fundamental principles of ESL teaching presented in the course. The student has not been receptive to instructor feedback nor shown improvement in the student’s weak areas.
*Pass/fail grades are at the discretion of the TESL Department.
TARDINESS & ATTENDANCE POLICY
Only under extraordinary circumstances (death, accident) do we accept excused absences from this course. If you are ill, please provide a doctor’s note.
For every class missed there will be 1 (one) point deducted from your final grade, and student will not receive participation grade for that absence. For every tardy, there will be .5 (half) point deducted from your final grade.
