Field Teaching Experience

A few things for you to know about your teaching assignment:

1) You must produce a FORMAL LESSON PLAN (below) complete with handouts, copies of the text, board work and copies of ALL worksheets used in class.

    * A copy of this Lesson Plan, handouts, etc., should be given to the trainer

observing you immediately before your class begins.

    * Lesson plans may be typed or hand-written (legibly). You must complete one

Formal Lesson Plan for each class you teach, even if no one observes you on

      that particular day.
     * If you are not observed, give the lesson plan packet to the trainer who

observes your next class. Please do not mail or fax your lesson plans to TFLI

unless no one observes you on the last day.

2) The student-teacher must complete and submit a Self-Evaluation form  to the person observing after each class taught. If you are not observed, submit to the trainer who observes your next class.

3) Each lesson plan receives a grade regardless of whether or not your class is observed. Your grade will be based on your lesson plan.

4) If you are teaching 6 classes, you will be observed at least 4 times.  If you are teaching 5 classes, you will be observed at least 3 times by one trainer.  If you are teaching 3 classes, you will be observed at least 2 times by one trainer. ll observations are unannounced.

5) You may have different trainers observing your class.

6) Please do not try to guess when the trainers are coming, these are assigned in a random order.

7) Do not reschedule any of teaching assignments.

8) Please see the Observation Cover Page (below) to understand how you will be graded on each observed class.

9) After everyone has received their practice teaching site, please coordinate with one of your colleagues to observe him/her. Use the Observation Form #2 (below). After you have completed this observation, e-mail esl@tfli.org, fax (615-741-7331) or snail mail this form to the ESL Department at TFLI. The observation forms wil notbe returned to you.

10) If your students are not present for a class on a day you are scheduled to teach, you will have to reschedule that class with Angie or Jane and make it up.

11) TESL students who would like to arrange their own teaching must submit a proposal to Jane (jane@tfli.org) which outlines the details of the arrangement.  Download the Field Teaching Proposal here.

12) TESL students may be asked to extend the Field Teaching from 1 to 5 classes if:

* the TESL student is unprepared for Field Teaching (does not bring a lesson plan, handouts, boardwork),

* the TESL student is late for Field Teaching classes,

* the TESL student is argumentative or hostile with staff, trainers, supervisors or observers, and/or

* the TESL student does not comply with the rules and expecations of TFLI and/or the center in which     s/he is teaching,

* The TESL student is averaging below a C- in the Field Teaching lessons.
