Language Analysis and Awareness

TO BE SUBMITTED
Jan 10 (due before midnight)

Introduction to Grammar

As native English speakers we have an intuitive understanding of our language —we know what ‘sounds right’ even though we may not know why it is correct. Language teachers must develop awareness and an active, solid understanding of the various language elements and how they work. This is so we can offer clear and concise explanations, successfully convey meaning to our students, proactively address possible problematic areas, understand why students are having difficulties, and effectively correct them.

The grammar tasks have been assigned to help you become familiar with different language components and terminology you may come across while teaching. These aspects will be addressed again during the In-Class Training.

To help you with grammar tasks, it would be useful to refer to Internet resources or a grammar or pronunciation reference text. The following are recommended:

- Fuchs, M., Grammar Express, Longman Pearson Education, 2001
- Fuchs, M., Grammar Express Basic, Longman Pearson Education, 2004
- Swan, M., Practical English Usage, Oxford University Press, 2005

These texts will be made available during the In-Class Training for your reference.

To complete these assignments, save these assignments on a MS Word document. You are not required to retype the questions, but you should clearly title and number your answers. Please do not send PDF files or files on WordPad.
