What do students learn?
Day 1 – Map-reading and Cultural Competency
Instructor – Hamish MacFarlane, Tennessee Foreign Language Institute
- Map-reading – GPS is a valuable business tool but no taxi driver should depend on it. How to navigate around Nashville, including key streets, neighborhoods and landmarks.
- Cultural competency – the meaning of “Southern Hospitality” and how to provide a professional and comfortable journey.
Day 2 – Customer Service, Tourism, and Accessibility
Instructor – Shannon Largen – Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp
- Nashville Backstage – a tour of Nashville’s major landmarks, biggest tourist attractions, and history.
- Creating Applause – how to create positive customer service experiences.
- All Access – an award-winning session focusing on serving customers with disabilities.
Day 3 – Taxi Driver’s Ordinance
Instructor – Khaled Waren
- A thorough examination of the Taxi Driver’s Ordinance, the laws that govern taxi driving, insights and trade secrets for new drivers, and staying both safe and legal on the job.

When can I register for Music City Taxi Pro?
You may register for Music City Taxi Pro as soon as you pass the English Language Competency Exam. We accept cash, check, or any major credit card. It is strongly recommended that you register for classes on the same day you pass the English Exam. Each class is limited to 18 students and there is a good chance the class will be full if you wait until the last minute to register.
Can I Register for Taxi Pro on the first day of class?
No. You must register for Taxi Pro before the start of class at the Tennessee Foreign Language Institute (TFLI) in Metro Center. No walk-in registrations will be accepted.
What if I register for Taxi Pro class and my circumstances change or I later change my mind? Can I receive a refund?
It is your responsibility to contact TFLI as soon as possible if you are unable to make the class for which you enroll. It may be possible to transfer your registration to another class time. Refunds may be allowed before classes begin in special cases. No refunds will be granted after classes begin.
Where is TFLI?
TFLI is located at 220 French Landing Drive, Nashville, 37243. It’s just off I-65 at the Rosa Parks Drive exit. Note that the Taxi Pro classes are sometimes at a different location (see below).
English Language Competency Exam
I am a native English speaker; do I still have to take the English Language Competency Exam?
Yes, Every new applicant must take the English Language Competency Exam regardless of origin.
What is a passing score on the English Language Competency Exam?
You must score an 85 or higher to register for Taxi Pro.
What if I fail the English Language Competency Exam?
If you fail the exam you will be required to wait at least 1 month before being able to retake the exam. If your score falls below a 78, you will be required to wait at least 3 months before retaking the exam. It is strongly recommended that you take English classes if you fail the exam. TFLI will provide you with a list of free and low-cost English classes in the Nashville area.
Music City Taxi Pro classes
Where are classes located?
September-December 2016, Taxi Pro classes will be held at TFLI, 220 French Landing Drive, Nashville, 37243. We are just off I-65 at the Rosa Parks Drive exit.
Check with TFLI directly for future Taxi Pro class locations.
Do I have to pass a test?
Yes, there will be a quiz at the end of each day of Taxi Pro. The quiz will be on information you learned that day. You must score an 80% or higher to pass the quiz.
What if I fail the quiz at the end of the day?
If you fail one or more of the three classes, you have two options to still earn your permit. First, Taxi Pro students can retake that particular class during a future Taxi Pro training session. You will still have to earn a passing score at the end of the class. This option is highly recommended since it is necessary to fully learn the information before becoming a taxi driver. If your score falls below a 70 you may be asked to wait for two or more months before registering again for the class.
Second, you can make an appointment to retake the quiz at a cost of $25 per quiz at TFLI. This option is generally only extended to individuals who make above a 70.
You have 2 months to make up any failed classes. If you cannot make up your classes in this time you will have to retake all 3 classes.
