Saturday, August 26th – Raising Bilingual Children
1pm – 4pm . FREE . Tennessee Foreign Language Institute
What is it like to grow up learning two languages at once?
How do I make sure my child retains his second language once he starts school?
Does teaching a child two languages from birth delay their speaking abilities or cause confusion?
What can I do as a teacher to encourage students in my class who speak languages other than English to develop that skill?
TFLI presents “Raising bilingual children: workshop for parents, teachers, and the monolingual community”
Join TFLI for a workshop and panel discussion on growing up bilingual and raising bilingual children. Learn the facts about learning two langauges from birth, tactics for raising children in a bilingual setting, and hear first-hand accounts from individuals who grew up in a bilingual home and parents currently raising bilingual children. We’ll also be answering your questions!
We will talk first about how languages are acquired by children and what we can and should do as their parents, teachers and community to help them learn as much of as many languages as possible. Although young children learn languages very effectively, they only do so in the right conditions. How we help provide these circumstances, how we can facilitate our children’s continuous development of their different languages even as they enter a monolingual school, and what’s the role of school and greater community in this process, will be discussed.
Please bring a photo I.D. to check in at our building, as with all state offices.
