The registration process

STEP 1: Take the placement test. First, a student must request an appointment to take the placement test: Please call (615) 741-7579.

The days available to take the test vary. Appointments are made on a first-come, first-served basis (with no exceptions). Appointment slots are filled quickly, so please prepare to make arrangements at least 5 days in advance.

The test costs $20.The test and grading takes about 1.5 hours. Immediately after the test, the student will know into which level s/he is placed.

STEP 2: Register for class.
After a student has been tested and knows the appropriate level, the student must complete a registration form (or register on-line with a credit card) and pay for the level and the textbooks that accompany that course.

The classes are divided into 5 different courses and subdivided into 5 levels. For example, a student may test into “Intermediate 3”. This means the student is in the Intermediate Course, and in the 3rd level of that course.

The student may join the classes at anytime. The ESL Department has a “rolling registration” period, meaning that students may enroll in our ESL classes at anytime during the year. If the level has already begun, as a first-time student, the tuition may be pro-rated.

Levels: The duration of the levels are generally 5 weeks, with classes meeting 3.25 hours for one day of the week for a total of 16 hours. The classes may meet in the mornings or evenings during the week OR on Saturday mornings. Each class maintains a different schedule.

Costs: The first level costs $160. Then, after a student has taken one level, s/he will obtain a status as a “returning student”. The student will receive a discount for every level thereafter. The succeeding levels cost $130.

Books: The books last for the duration of one course, i.e., the Intermediate books are valid for all Intermediate levels: Intermediate 1,2,3,4,5. The books cost $40-$60 (depending on the level). Students are required to buy books.

It is very important the student pay the fees before the start of the class. In the case that the class is cancelled (because of the lack of enrollment or student payment), the student will be reimbursed. Credit card reimbursements can be done immediately. For students paying by check or cash, the reimbursement process may take 2-6 weeks. The level requires a minimum of four (4) students.

STEP 3: Start the class.
Once the student’s level has been determined, and the student has registered and paid for the class, s/he may begin attending the class.

TEXTBOOKS
You should get your textbooks when you register and pay for your class. Each course requires a different textbook, but the same textbook is used for the duration of the course. For example, you will use Interchange 1, 3rd ed. for the Beginning Course, levels 1 – 5.

If you are a new student coming in at the last level of a course, for example, Advanced 5, then we encourage you to buy the textbook, but we can make copies upon request.

Your class may have a “practice teacher” 2-3 times per year.

El proceso de la inscripción

ETAPA 1: Tomar el examen de nivel.
Primero, el estudiante debe pedir una cita para tomar el examen de nivel.

Los días disponibles para tomar el examen varían. Las citas se hacen por orden de llegada, (sin excepciones). Los espacios para las citas se llenan rápidamente, así que prepárese para hacer arreglos por lo menos 5 días por adelantado.

Tomar los exámenes cuesta $ 20. El examen y corregir el examen toma alrededor de 1 hora y media. Inmediatamente después del examen, el/la estudiante sabrá en que nivel se le ha colocado.

ETAPA 2: Inscribirse para la clase.
Después que el estudiante ha tomado el examen y sabe su nivel, el estudiante debe completar una planilla de inscripción (o inscribirse por internet con una tarjeta de crédito) y pagar por el nivel y los libros que van con ese curso.

Las clases están divididas en 5 cursos diferentes y subdivididos en 5 niveles. Por ejemplo: un estudiante puede ser colocado en el nivel Intermedio 3. Esto quiere decir que el estudiante está en el curso Intermedio, y en el 3º nivel de ese curso.

El estudiante puede entrar a las clases cuando quiera. El Departamento de ESL tiene un período de “inscripción constante” lo que quiere decir que los estudiantes se pueden inscribir en nuestras clases de ESL cuando quiera durante el año. Si el nivel ya ha comenzado, el costo de inscripción puede ser prorrateado para un estudiante nuevo.

Niveles: Normalmente la duración de los niveles es 5 semanas, con clases de 3.25 tres horas y 25 minutos , un día por semana con un total de 16 horas. Las clases pueden ser en la mañana o en la tarde durante la semana O los sábados por la mañana. Cada clase mantiene un horario diferente.

Costo: El primer nivel cuesta $ 160. Luego, después que un estudiante haya tomado un nivel, él/ella obtendrá la condición de “estudiante que vuelve”. El estudiante recibirá un descuento por cada nivel de allí en adelante por cada nivel. Los niveles siguientes costarán $130.

Libros: Los libros se usan mientras dure un curso, eje., los cursos de Intermedio se pueden usar para todos los cursos de Intermedio: Intermedio 1, 2, 3, 4,5. Los libros cuestan $40-$60 (dependiendo del nivel). Se requiere que los estudiantes compren los libros.

Es muy importante que los estudiantes hagan sus pagos antes de comenzar la clase. En el caso de que la clase sea cancelada (debido a la falta de estudiantes o pago del estudiante), se le rembolsará al estudiante. Los reembolsos con tarjeta de crédito se pueden hacer inmediatamente. Para los estudiantes que pagan con cheques o efectivo, el proceso de reembolso puede tomar de de 2 a 6 semanas. El nivel requiere un mínimo de (4) estudiantes.

ETAPA 3: Comenzar la clase.
Una vez que se haya determinado el nivel del estudiante, y el estudiante se haya inscrito y pagado por la clase, él/ella podrá comenzar a asistir a su clase.

LIBRO de TEXTO
Usted debe comprar sus libros cuando se inscriba y pague por su clase. Cada curso requiere un libro texto diferente, pero el mismo libro se usa mientras dure el curso. Por ejemplo, usted usará:
Interchange 1, 3rd ed. Para el curso de Principiante, Niveles 1 – 5.

Si usted es un estudiante nuevo que está entrando en el último nivel de un curso, por ejemplo, Avanzado 5, entonces le aconsejamos que compre el libro, pero podemos hacer copias si usted lo pide.

PAGOS DE LOS ESTUDIANTES
Los estudiantes DEBEN pagar TODO antes de asistir a las clases.
