Professional Development Course
For Teachers of Foreign Languages
(based on content from TFLI's 140 hour TESL course)

"I thoroughly enjoyed the TESL course offered by the Tennessee Foreign Language Institute.  Even though I spent 33 years in public education as both teacher and administrator, it exceeded my expectations for both rigor and content."

Barry Watkins, TESL graduate Spring 2009

TFLI's Professional Development course is designed for:

• Experienced teachers of foreign languages who would like a

refresher, a renewed sense of inspiration, new ideas and

methodologies to provide more tools to teach more successfully

• Tutors of a foreign language who would like guidance, tips and techniques to improve the experience for teacher and students

• Foreign language teachers who feel burned out and would like to connect with others in the profession and renew their enjoyment of

and enthusiasm for teaching

• Current or new teachers of foreign languages who have had little

or no formal training and need some guidance on their approach

• Instructors of other subjects who are interested in adding or

changing to foreign language teaching

The course consists of 2 hours of Pre-Course Assignments, 3 hours

of Pre-Course class observation and 15 hours of in-class training for

a total of 20 hours of Professional Development. Metro Schools

teachers can apply this to Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

      Components of this course are:

A) Pre-class assignments are designed to raise the teacher’s awareness of his or her own learning style and previous language

learning experience as well as provide an overview of common

teaching methodologies. Participants should allow 1-2 hours to

complete their pre-course assignments and submit them at the

in-class training.

B) Pre-class observation to be done in the weeks prior to

the in-class training portion of the course. Participants will receive an evaluation form at registration and will be instructed to view an online video of an ESL class, to complete the form and to submit it for review

at the in- class training. Participants should allow 2-3 hours for this.

C) In-class training, which will focus on communicative language teaching techniques and creative lesson planning. In addition to

practicing new teaching techniques, participants will complete a

number of group and learner-centered activities and tasks, as well

as a peer-teaching assignment. Due to the intensive nature of the

course, all 15 hours of the in-class training should be attended.
